Gutilux EL 537/1 Romanian Modernist Table Lamp – c. 1960s–1970s

Produced by Gutilux in Romania during the communist period, the EL 537/1 table lamp is a distinctive example of Romanian Mid-Century industrial design.

Its compact silhouette is constructed through a sequence of simple geometric volumes: a circular red base, a gently curved metal support, a wide conical white shade and a cylindrical red upper section. The strong contrast between red and white gives the lamp a graphic presence, while the chromed support introduces a precise metallic accent.

Designed primarily as a functional household object, the adjustable shade directs the light while also defining the lamp’s sculptural character. The combination of lacquered pressed steel, chromed metal and moulded plastic reflects the materials and manufacturing processes commonly used for Romanian consumer goods during the period.

The underside retains the original Gutilux manufacturer’s mark, together with the EL 537/1 model code and factory electrical specifications.
